On Sandra Dodd's AlwaysLearning list, there was a discussion about how unschooling helps one's kids to be "responsible." I liked how Sandra mentioned that responsibility is tied to trust as that is how I see it also. She wrote, "Maybe thinking of "responsibility" as "trustworthiness" will make it easier to see in an unschooling light."
I believe that the behavior parent's model plays a large part in how children behave.
I believe that experience and a child's individual temperment/personality also play a part in how they behave and think and react.
I believe that we can't make our children come out a certain way so that they will act responsible. By saying you want them to act responsible, you are saying you want them to act the way you think is "responsible," which may have more than one solution. Truly, we can only hope and trust that they will continue to evaluate each situation in their life and then choose what action they take. Only they can determine that. I trust that they will do their best. I trust their decisions will be made just like they are being made now...based on the info they have, based on their life experiences, current health, financial situation, what we have modeled..the same things that we use to make our decisions. By trusting them to do the best they can at the time, just like we do, we realize we don't have to even think of "teaching" them how to be responsible. It will just happen, but may be different than how we would like them to be/act. They will be however they will be. Responsibility is really a judgement.
One of the best things about unschooling is the discussions that take place within families. We talk about why we make certain decisions and discuss various possibilities and possible outcomes of situations. We talk about why we do what we do or why we make the choices we make. We talk about what happens if we make a different choice and how that might affect others or the environment for example. Because we dialog with our kids as part of our normal life and respect our kid's choices as well, our kids communicate with us and we trust each other. It is a nice way to live where everyone is appreciated and different viewpoints are considered and people are accepted, even if we have different values.

Pregnant?
It has been more than 4 weeks since my last period. Hmmm. I seem to fluctuate between two ways of thinking:
If I am pregnant....
1. OMG! How this will change our life! We just spent $2,600 getting the Subaru fixed and we'd have to get a new car! We don't have the money to pay for the birth and a new car! And I'd not be able to ski because I couldn't leave the baby. I'd have to take time off from dance, or maybe I could bring the baby with me? And would this baby be like Makana and cry in the car so that I never want to drive? And I'd not sleep well and what if I am grouchy during the intense time of taking care of a baby?! How could we get a dog too? How could I walk a dog and take care of a baby? Katie would be heartbroken! How could I do all the things I want/need to do with the kids (for homeschool purposes which really are just for living life purposes)? I need to be able to take them to places that interest them and get us out of the house! It would be a disservice to the older kids if I stayed at home like we did this past winter! Also, what if something happens to me? What if something happens to the baby? Have I exposed myself to fumes or cell phone energy that affected the fetus? How would I have time to write or check email or read? My Dad will blame me and think we are over our heads or blame me for making Jim's life be more difficult as Jim has already enough of us to provide for. Cheery Dad. I try to let him own his own feelings, but it is hard. I still would like him to think good of me - gotta rid myself of that! Or I will fear that deep down, Jim will blame me (even though he won't say it) for guilting him into having one. Not that I really did, but because I hope/wonder every time if it might happen, I feel more responsible. Yes, I blame myself for lots of things I guess. Maybe I feel like Jim is saying "if it happens it happens" (even though he'd of had a vasectomy long ago) because he wants to please me. I wish we'd both be pleased. But do I wish that we'd not have another one unless we'd both be pleased if he is willing to take chances? I guess I can't blame my internal thoughts for what happens. Or can I? Maybe I manifested this?! That is rediculous. But maybe not. Hmmm. Food for thought. If a person's desire could manifest a pregnancy, then should I feel guilty for my feelings which brought about a child Wolf didn't want? Yes for the happening. No for feeling how I feel. I need to accept my feelings. I am entitled to feel how I feel. Then no for even the happening because my feelings are okay to have.
2. I am so excited! I have always wanted a big family! Will it be a boy or a girl? Makana wants a little brother. She adores baby Ryan and baby Boston and would love a little brother. Li is so wonderful with little children and he loves babies too. He has been saying things (not recently, but as of a couple months ago especially) about having another baby. I saved all the baby clothes just in case. On Monday, I was in the jeep just thinking and Wolfie noticed and asked what I was thinking about. I said that I had not gotten my period yet and I was fretting about whether or not I could be pregnant. I said I had to find out and wanted to get a test. He said that he's been watching Star Wars and "It is what it is." (That has been his slogan for a while now.) At least he didn't seem upset by it.
When I was dividing up the sizes of clothes to either save or give away or put away for the next season, he didn't make his usual comment about why was I saving the baby clothes. He said something like "It's gonna happen sooner or later." He didn't seem either for or against the idea though. It is what it is and we'll go on with however it is.
This makes me think of the idea Abrahama and Esther Hicks have ...that we should think "It's Done" already and how thinking that helps you deal with "what is." Like how it helps me deal with life or reality in general. Abraham and Esther Hicks say that if we remember "It's Done," we don't have to worry, just go about our business.
As good as it sounds, I like Jim's idea of "It is what it is" better. The "It's Done" idea seems to evoke in me the same kind of thoughts like the idea of our life being already charted out for us. Like there is no free will and everything is predetermined. Well, I don't buy that. But I suppose to take what I like from the "It's Done" idea, I could just simply not worry and do what I do and accept that I do what I do and don't do what I don't do, without attaching guilt to what I "expected" myself to accomplish or what other people think about what I do or don't do. Maybe though the idea of "It's Done" can also help us see the positive future and that can bring us more confidence and that in turn actually affects the outcome of situations...a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course, you'd have to see the positive things in the future, not concentrate on the negative or you won't have confidence and your fears and insecurity might bring about things you don't want. Ahhh all these deep thoughts. Or crazy thoughts as Wolfie might think! But I like to contemplate these kinds of things.
If I am not pregnant...
1. I will be sad because I have really explored the idea of being pregnant...feeling like I am, thinking I might be, coming up with good and bad scenarios. And it would be so nice to have another child! How much joy they bring! I love being a Mommy more than anything else! Having children who are respected and honored and allowed to be who they are is what will help make our world a more joyful place to be. And raising them this way, they will be more at peace and could maybe enact positive world changes. I hope I do my part as a parent to help my children be happy and healthy and that they grow up making the world and their family's lives happy ones that bring about positive things for our world/community - even just the joyful energy is a positive thing for our world! If it leads to other things, great. If not, I would be grateful that they'd examine life and expectations and deliberately make choices that feel right to them.
2. Phew! Relief! I am so glad we can keep our car and maybe get a dog! And I can maybe begin writing books! I can take Katie out and do more with her each year! I can still enjoy ballet sometimes when Makana is happy at home with Daddy. Life will be full of adventure and excitement and we can travel in the car! I can do so much more than I could with an infant! I can be more relaxed about my health and environment than when I am pregnant.

Thoughts on my morning walk
This morning I woke up before 7 and nursed Makana on both sides. I asked Makana to move over so I could get up and use the bathroom. She had moved over and seemed to fall back asleep. I took that moment to stay still and look at Li. Really look at him. He is so cute! I love him so much! Makana said, "You can go now, Mommy." She was awake. I said "Thanks." Pulled covers up over Li better, did the same for Makana, then got up and used the bathroom. Makana seemed to fall asleep, so I showered. Sometimes she gets up and comes in with me, but not today. She must still be tired and need more sleep. I got dressed and brushed teeth. Came downstairs. Saw Wolfie. Chatted a bit. He went upstairs to shower and I headed out quietly for a walk. Saw our neighbor Tom and the dogs. Chatted and walked with them for a little while. He is getting one of his dog's teeth cleaned, but is a little nervous because his dog is 11 years old and will have to be put out for the cleaning. I asked him if he thought the cleaning was absolutely necessary. He said that he was told that poison (little by little) accumulates in the dog's mouth if he doesn't get it cleaned and he is afraid if he doesn't follow the suggestions of the vet, something might happen to his dog. I will research this as I am curious if it is truly necessary or at some point if the benefits of having the teeth cleaned are outweighed by the possible complications of anesthetizing an older dog.
I also looked for the lady slippers where I saw them Memorial Day Weekend two years ago. Not sure if I saw the beginnings of them or not. I will keep looking. They only have about 4 weeks to when I expect them to bloom.
Some thoughts on my sunny walk this morning as I breathed in the crisp, clean air were:
How crystal clean that water looked in the culvert. It was completely see-through. I then thought how our world was really just made of energy. Everything is energy. When I brought up that idea to Wolfie a day or so ago, he said that Albert Einstein wrote about that too. So if our world is made up of energy, how is it that we see so much different "matter." Is it that energy manifests as matter and it just manifests in different ways?
"His thoughts are in alignment with (the Source's) vibrational energy." - How did I get this thought? Well, Tom asked how the kids were and I said great and getting big and tall. He said he bet they would be doing unexpected things or something like that (and I still don't know what he meant). I mentioned that Makana was still shy somewhat, but not like she used to be. She is coming out of that stage. And he sort of said, "Well.." and shrugged - I think he meant that of course it is alright and she is just a child. But he seemed so caring and I got a good feeling like he really cares for people. We chatted a minute more and I said I needed to go as Makana likes me home when she wakes up. I finished my walk thinking how his thoughts were compassionate and understanding toward little children and I liked that. It made me feel good to know that others care about kids. And respect that it is okay for them to be shy or go through their stages. Perhaps I am just reading into this, but it made me feel good anyway. I guess the words on the radicalunschoolingwithloa list are getting to me because I did think of the word that Abraham and Esther Hicks would have used...."thoughts in alignment with vibrational energy." Though now, I guess it is really MY thoughts that are in alignment. When I perceived our neighbor having kind and compassionate thoughts toward children, it made me feel good and it was really my thoughts that were in alignment. Hmmm...perhaps if I think about the positive things people say more often, I could feel better in general.

Lincolnville Beach
Wow! Our first day at the beach! Li had on his bathing suit and Kana put hers over her clothes.
We did a couple of errands and there we were at the beach! We played in the sand, made sandcastles and walked way out (really low tide) to the mud flats where we found either a baby shrimp or baby lobster. It was see through and flopped around on and off. Makana had a blast digging in the dirt and sand. Li met a little boy named AJ and invited him to make sand castles and pyramids with us. (Li is getting into pyramids...maybe from reading the Sir Cumference books and other books by that author which we've recently been rereading.) Li made sure to exchange phone numbers with the other boy's mom as we may meet there again sometime.
Saw Harry and Marsha and met their grandson Devon there! Harry was the person who thought it was a baby lobster.
Katie stayed in the car reading the book that I just picked up from the library; "Thirteen." She was anxious to get home to call Keely and pick out clothes for school and go off to her play. Eventually she came out of the car and had some fun it the water. With all of us in good spirits, we returned home for a snack before heading out again.
Dropped Katie off at the play for rehearsal and then the show. We met the Splatter Kids people and picked up their art schedule as I know my kids will love it! Met some homeschooler friends by the fencing class going on.
Dropped off videos at Rockland Library. Went to scooter in the parking lot by Armelle's house. Armelle was at the library at an art class. It is a free drawing class and if the kids want to go, we will join it next week. Scootered for a long time, watched an orange kitty spray urine on the funeral home foundation, followed the kitty all over talking about cats, Beacon our old cat in Maui, and how animals claim their territory. Played capture the flag. Met Armelle and her family on their way home. Shared our cookies with Jacinta, chatted with Armelle while Makana scootered again and pretended to drive the car and showed her doggy book to Jacinta. Li ended up scootering and then playing some sort of basketball game with some other boys who showed up.
Left and met Jim at Katie's play. Headed home with just Makana as Jim took the other two to find hair dye.
A good day in all!

Katie Tries School
On Sunday, Katie asked if she could try out school. Initially I ranted about the negatives of school and inside I felt rejected and like a failure for not making our life like what she wished it to be. If our homeschooled life was such fun, then why would she want to go to school? However, I took some deep breaths, thought more, apologized for my initial reaction and we discussed the idea over a couple of days. I also read as much as I could find about it on various online homeschooling yahoo groups.
She listened to all of my reasons why I disliked the idea of her going to school and why I felt it was a bad institution for children. I had suggested that she read the Teenage Liberation Handbook and Underground Education, but she said that they are just other people's opinions and the only opinion that really matters is hers. Well said! I explained that I would like to meet whatever underlying reasons she had for going outside of school. I listened to her as she explained that she just doesn't understand or know about school and that she is curious to find out what it is all about. However she told me that she will probably want to go after visiting for a day because she will be so excited. She also told me that this Wednesday is crazy hair day and asked if she could get blue hair dye!
Yesterday morning I spoke to the Middle School office and arranged for Katie to go for a day. I was even able to speak to the bus director to get permission for her to ride the bus. We went into the school yesterday to locate the Main Office. We had a chance to meet the principal (who was very nice) and discussed Katie's hope to go for three days to get more of a feel for school. The principal (Maria?) said that it would be fine for her to come for Wednesday and Thursday this week, but that Friday would be kind of crazy as they are having some kind of thing going on after 4th period. We were all pleased.
Jim and Katie purchased temporary scented Hannah Montana blue hair dye last night. Katie was exstatic! Li had gone with them and was very angry he couldn't find red hair dye. Jim even looked in more than one store - and this was after Katie's play and prior to going home or having dinner. They did find permanent red hair dye, but Jim wouldn't buy it - maybe he didn't want Li to dye his hair red or he knew I think dyes are harmful to people. Jim said that Li was very upset in the store and on the way home. He still was angry for a long time at home until after his long bath. Glad he felt better, but wish he had not used up all of the expensive organic shampoo and the organic California Baby bubble bath that we have saved for a future special bubble bath. Li told me that he used them up and then said, "But I didn't use the white one" meaning the cream rinse. I think he told me because he felt bad about it as he knew I wouldn't like it - I don't think he really understands that they are expensive - he doesn't really get that yet. I didn't make a big deal out of it, but did tell him they cost alot and how much ...not that he would get it, but more for me than him. And asked him to scrub his feet with bar soap next time. In bed last night Li brought up the whole dye thing again. He said that he wanted to do it because he told someone he was going to and that if he didn't stick to what he said, that people wouldn't trust him next time. I said that it is true that people may learn not to trust others who say something and then do not follow through. However, that I felt this was something that he could change his mind about and most people would still have trust in him. I told him I'd research how hair dye affects people and if I can find some info stating it doesn't get into the body or scalp, maybe we could do it. And I am totally fine if he wanted to keep looking for red temporary hair dye. Li seems in better spirits this morning.
Last night we made her lunch. Her clothes were already laid out on the bed. She and Keely had picked them out carefully. Brianne's hand-me-down cool camophlage jeans and her new blue shirt. Katie tried to go to bed about 10:30, but by 11:15 or so she yelled downstairs and I went up and snuggled her. Makana came in and snuggled and nursed and then wanted to go to our regular bed. So we did.
This morning I woke at 5:50 and nursed Kana until 5:59. I turned off the alarm and woke Katie. She got up at got ready. I helped her with her hair. It was fun! I did most of the blue smelly streaks and made a part in the middle of her hair for her. She did the glitter where she liked. Then we came downstairs and got her lunch into her "satchel" as she used to call it. Now she calls it a "bag." It really is my old pocketbook.
She couldn't eat as she was too excited and nervous. She brought out my grandma's old silver necklace with a heart, but we couldn't get it untangled in the time we had left. She said that she sometimes pretends that Grandma is telling her to be brave, even though inside she knows it is her. She said how strange it is that people do those sort of things. I said I understood and was sorry I couldn't untangle it either. I said that it is sort of like how people use God (in my opinion, but hey, whatever gets one through this life with whatever strength you need to muster..each to their own.).
She wanted me to go to the bus with her. Wow. When I was a kid I would have been embarassed if my mom was there waiting with me. Jim felt the same way I did. So at 6:45am we headed for the bus stop. I know she felt so good about herself and this adventure. I too was excited for her.
We saw Keely coming our way and she had hair sticking out to the sides like Pippi Longstocking. She had flowers coming off the top of her head too! Definately crazy hair!! Took a picture of them with my cell phone. Now I need to figure out how to download the photos to the computer so I can post them here!
Erin came up Lantern Lane with Ian. They had green hair with sparkles. Katie ran off toward Erin shouting her name excitedly. Keely ran too. I asked them if I could take a photo of them. Ian said, "Do I have to?" No, only if you want to I replied. So he backed off and I snapped a shot of the three girls with their crazy hair-do's.
The bus came and they got on. I wanted to hug her goodbye, but I could see her energy was buzzing and I didn't want to embarras her. I looked up toward the bus, but they must have already sat down. They ride with high school students. The middle school students get off and the bus continues on to the high school. Wow. In NJ, each school had it's own kids on the bus. Guess this is more efficient and there are less kids here. When I looked up, I thought I'd see these happy kids smiling and waving to me. I then realized that perhaps Katie, Keely and Erin were the only excited kids on that bus. The rest looked like drones going through the day. I then remembered how it felt to be doing the same thing day after day and being very tired in the morning and just mustering up energy to do what I had to do. Kind of felt like that when I commuted to work on the train too, but with a little more choice as at least I could choose what kind of work I applied for and I was getting paid.
I was a little teary eyed as I was very happy that Katie was going to have an exciting day and I felt good that I was able to help her experience something she wanted to try.
When I got home from my walk (this is the second morning I got up early and walked), Jim asked me if I was okay. I said yes. We talked alot. He said that this is exactly what we hoped for her...to not be afraid of trying new things and experiences. And to have trust in her...from everything I send him (posts, daily groove) he said to have faith in her and that sometimes children surprise us. I appreciated him trying to comfort me.
So, we will see what happens. Don't think she would really get a feel for school unless she truly enrolls. Think even if she did, she'd eventually want to stop at some point. And if not, I'd either come to terms with it or we'd talk about it then. I do hope that she has a great experience today and gets some idea of what it is like. But...I do hope she doesn't like it so much she wants to go!!!
Oh, and I called Kelly Lovejoy last night. Had to talk to someone who understands my philosophy and lifestyle! She was so nice talking to me! Told me to take a deep breath! See how she likes it and call her back on Friday. That if she ever did go to school, make sure the school knows we don't want her there and she can come home whenever she wants. And make sure Katie is committed to do the work.
Why does Katie want to go to school? Well, besides natural curiosity, she is reading lots of books like "Eleven," "Twelve," and "Thirteen," and many, many other books that revolve around school or puberty and she is now into various bands and teen stars and watching sitcoms like Hannah Montana and Zoe 101 and Icarly, etc that involve school. Plus, her two best friends go and live in our neighborhood and talk about it. So, can't blame her for being interested.

Feeling Sad
Katie said yesterday (while we were driving to Maine Sport with Keely and Li and Makana) that she wanted to try going to school! Gasp!!!! I was horrified and said NO way would I ever let her go to school. Then I calmed down and said that perhaps she could try it for three days (if they let her), but that I wanted her to read The Teenage Liberation Handbook and The Underground History books first. I would like her to read some books that I feel discuss clearly and sensibly why I think schools are not a good choice. I must say that I also feel like somehow I am a failure because perhaps I have not provided a stimulating, interesting and entertaining environment for her. What am I missing? Here at home she can do what she wants, learn what she wants when she wants to, etc. We have involved her in piano, painting, theatre, soccer, basketball, etc but somehow it is not enough. When I asked her what she thought she wanted to gain from going to school, she said that she just didn't know what it was all about and wanted to try it out. Basically she is curious. Her two best friends live in our neighborhood and go to school.
I feel so scared, disappointed and saddened by her wishes. I at first wanted to say NO WAY and stick to my guns. But I don't want to lose her trust. My husband says she has been watching too much Zoe 101! LOL! She really has been getting into all these books about school and like Jim said, she has been watching lots of shows where school is a big part of the show.
Read as much as I could find on AlwaysUnschooled in the archieves about kids wanting to go to school. Although it is always somewhat helpful, I just have to get through my own experience and make the best decisions I can respecting her choices and wishes and trust her as well as myself. I hope I can get through this one! Got to get up to bed with tired Makana. Will call the school tomorrow to see if she can visit. I can't go with her as my other two kids would be a distraction and it simply wouldn't be allowed.

Feeling Mad about Jim's Work Schedule and Religious Thoughts
I am so frustrated with Jim's work hours. This is not the lifestyle I wanted. I wish he would end work at 5pm, even 5:30pm. But Noooooo. He just can't possibly go into work early and so ends up putting in his 9 hours and coming home between 7:30 (early) and 8:30 (average). Of course during the "busy" time of year, it could be as late as 9 or 10pm. Arestophenes (sp?) -rediculous!!!!
When he took this job up here, the job was supposed to be from 8-5. How come he can't do that? My thoughts: if the rest of the family makes the first step in getting up earlier, then he will maybe follow suit.
And the busy season. Well, we were told it was January. Okay, so I could deal with him working 6 days a week in January, not that I'd like it. (And it was harder the younger the kids were! And when Li was in that angry stage.) But he is still working weekends and it is now April 14th! So much for that! And it is not like he's going to get comp time for the extra hours and days he has put in, whether it is visiting a client in Bangor and getting home late, staying late at work on weekdays, or putting in the extra time on weekends.
He was told that if he got his work done, he could take time off. Or if he wanted to work a weekend day, he could take off a weekday. They'd be flexible. That SO doesn't happen.
And it is not even like we are comfortably getting by. Perhaps if we bought a smaller house and he found a different job (one where he could just put in 8 hours a day, 5 days a week), we could have more family time. I don't get it. To me, life is about the TIME you have. It is about being able to use it wisely. I fear that Jim has gotten caught up in living almost like he was in school....do what you have to do and then wake up and do it again. He doesn't realize that THIS IS HIS LIFE and he has a CHOICE on how he wants to spend his time here on Earth in this life. Is this how he really wants to spend it? I agree that it is nice when work gives one a sense of satisfaction. And I too enjoy doing a good job. I feel some sort of self-worth at doing my best when I do something. However, there is a point when one crosses over the line and it becomes too much work. One then loses focus about why one works in the first place.
Is he craving attention from Henry, Mary, or trying to prove something to himself? Does he feel like he is not good enough at his job and so has to work more to do what he feels he "should" be able to do in less time? If so, what would be the worst thing that could happen if he didn't do a good job? Lose his job? Have to move to a new place and find a new job? Hard in a recession, but not impossible. Is he feeling guilty that PPS pays others less, but that they do an almost equal amount of work? If so, unfortunately, that is not his problem, that is PPS's business. If that is true, I wish he wouldn't let it affect OUR life! And I do respect that quality of wishing things to be fair.
I also wish he would do something physically good for himself. He doesn't do any exercise. How about walking in the morning or evening...or at lunch? How about not spending all of lunch time still in front of the computer. It is not good for your eyes nor your body or spirit to be in that little office staring at a computer all day! At least go out for a breath of fresh air. Go to the ice rink, the park, come home, go for a short walk...DO something! I fear he is just going to drop dead! He gets all these weird pains, yet doesn't seem to give a damn about his health or well-being. I don't talk to him that much about it anymore. Sometimes we go for walks. But isn't this something the person who actually cares about themself (and his family) would do? I guess not (assuming he does care about us). Why does he not put in the time now and gain more time of life living (assuming no accidental death) feeling better and being able to bend and do more as an old person. I just don't get it and because I do care so much about my physical fitness, I just am so frustrated by his lack of it. I wish him to be around with me. As he says, perhaps I will die a death earlier because of my fear! So there you go!
Alright, done venting for now. Talked to Jocelyn Humes today. This subject came up. (Why does something bothering me always come up when I talk to her?!) She says she will pray for me. Sweet. She recommended I pray and I thought that was a good idea, except she thinks I should have a relationship with the Father first! Ha! I told her I don't necessarily believe in a God, but I do in prayer. I think that prayer helps me reconfirm and clearly think and feel and restate what is important to me, whether it is loving someone, wishing someone well, or hoping for something or giving forgiveness, anything. I am open to the possibility that there might be something to sending good vibes out there...might there be another dimension we just don't know about that transmits the good vibe energy. It doesn't matter as long as we feel good about it and in that way it helps us. Just as it is good for people to believe whatever they want with regard to religion...hey, whatever works. I don't appreciate nor like it when each holy roller thinks their way is the only way and the right way though. Like those kind of folks keep hoping you'll see the light...their light. And then you'll too be saved. And perhaps they will gain satisfaction from that. Maybe they think that by saving others, they will please God and receive His praise. It is scary how people can be so into their religion that they don't see reality. Like how Don Tracy told me that the Bible is against homosexuality and living together without being married (and of course read a scripture). Well, I think that homo's have been around forever and if that is how they are born or feel, WHO ARE WE to say that it is wrong. It might not be the way I would choose to live, but I would never condemn a person for that! I could love and do know good people like Ellie and Donna or other gay individuals who are really great people and that doens't make them horrible just because the are different or have different preferences. In fact, I think the Judgement of them by other people is horrible! Regardless of what any periodical says! I don't need someone else's opinion (including "God's" or some other infamous and well respected individual) to know in my heart what is right. I trust myself and I will judge which people I trust and like and want to be with. The 7th day adventists keep the sabbath holy (Saturday is their church day), the Jehovah Witnesses think the know the real, true way to live by the bible, and the christians and jews and catholics all have their own ideas as do the buddists (like alot of their wise words and the whole mindfulness thing and being in the present), muslims, quakers (like how politically active the Friends are!), and ba'hai faith (like the idea that they take much from all other religions, but still don't get how they care so much for their founder...the one with the long B last name that is hard to pronounce). Anyway, I mentioned to Jocelyn that I like to take what I like from many different religions, but that I don't ever see myself believing in just one religion. She thought that this didn't make sense. Hey, to each their own. I confessed to her that one reason I listen to Don Tracey at the door (he's the Jehovah Witness) is because I feel that is sort of my way of giving back to the community...well, to him anyway. I think it must make him feel so good to have someone actually listen to him. He once said he used to gamble, and that made me wonder if this Jehovah Witness way of life helps him live in a way that is more acceptable to him and his family and that must be so important to him. So, if I can help him by making him feel good about himself just by listening, if the kids are able to deal with it, so can I. He is a nice man too. Although I don't necessarily agree with what he believes in. But I respect that he comes to my door to share something with me that he so values. It is like me going to others to share organic lawn care with them. It is dear to the heart. And you know, listening is a loving thing that I can do at least sometimes.

Feeling Tired
I am tired today. Woke up with one of those headaches you get when you just don't get enough rest. At least I think that is what it is from. (Although as I am writing I do feel a little better, just tense in my shoulders.) Went to bed on the late side and didn't sleep well. Not like I ever do, but sleep felt much less solid than usual. Woke up early at 6:30am and tried to fall back to sleep because I feared the thought of being exhausted mid-day and hoped that I'd even get one more hour in. And the kids were sleeping so peacefully. Thought of reading a book, but decided to try to get in more sleep if possible. Was thinking of how my eyes don't focus so well right off in the morining. Have floaters and they seem to be more noticable in the morning. Think floaters lately seem to give me that same feeling as if my eyes are very tired. Wish I knew what to do to rid myself of them or even lessen them. Sometimes after a nap, I feel SO good and think, THIS is how I wish I felt all the time! Maybe someday I will either sleep more solidly, just get more sleep or more solid sleep, or get to take naps!
Who Let the Dogs Out?
So, we're sittin' at the table havin' lunch and singing Who Let The Dogs Out, Whoa! Whoa! I say to Makana joking, "Did you let the dogs out?" Well, that brought up all of us coming up with silly answers about who let the dogs out. Li suddenly looks very serious and says, "I know who let the dogs out." We inquire "Who?" He says, "The owls." Ha!
Li's Number Realizations
While I was cleaning the bathroom, Li (6 1/2 yrs) stood by the door and said You know what? and proceded to tell me that the second digit of numbers increase by one digit to get the next number. (The numbers go 10, 11, 12, 13, etc.) He said it works for 1's (meaning 10's) and 2's (meaning 20's). It is so cool how he contemplated things and then understands them. This is one of my favorite things to be a part of with the kids: sharing in their learning and realizations and being there when they figure things out! I am honored when my kids share their thoughts with me!

A Look At Minivans
I LOVE my Subaru and don’t see myself in a minivan. It’s just not “me.” Jim feels the same way about them and considers himself a jeep guy (yes, we still have the same soft top 1990 jeep with all the stickers on it). Recently, Katie has been sending us links to various Dodge minivans on ebay and to Dodge websites. At her insistence, I have watched several video clips from the Dodge website (storage, capacity, “green” features, etc.). While we were out this past Tuesday, we stopped by a dealer to look at the minivans. The salesperson was totally comfortable with the kids’ energy and enthusiasm! They of course loved the van (31K) that had the swivel chairs, table and 2 dvd screens. Makana enjoyed buckling herself in the rear seats and had just as much fun as Li and Katie. Katie was interested in the built in technology (computers, cd players, dvd players, etc.) and pointed out how many of the minivan’s features worked which she learned from watching those video clips and reading the Dodge website. She could be a good salesperson! On our way home I asked Katie if she was interested in getting a minivan for the additional elbow room or if it was because she thought it was necessary in order to get a dog. (I had mentioned that we should probably get a bigger car if we get a dog.) She said it would be nice to have more room, but she really wanted one because she wanted a dog. So, there you go!
I am glad that we looked at the minivans after all, besides having fun it was good to sit in one and see what they’d be like with our family. They do afford more elbow room for sure, but the back area is smaller than I thought. I think a dog would actually have more room in the back of our Subaru! My thoughts on a different car….I’d like to pay off our credit card before considering a car payment. And, I suppose that we still could get a dog and keep our car. To give Katie more room, perhaps Li could use the Safe Sit instead of his booster seat. Ahhh….good to consider all the options! And perhaps we’ll think of more ideas to live with what we have now.

It's *Really* Spring!
Last Sunday night we heard the northern flicker! A couple days later, the frogs were croaking in the pond! We spent much of Wednesday outside at the park! Ahhh.... I can take a breath of fresh, warmer air! The snow is almost gone from our backyard!

Bambi and Man
Makana watched the video of Bambi in the winter. I had mentioned that the mother gets killed ahead of time as I suspected that part might bother her and in case she chose not to watch it. She still did want to watch, but did become sad for the mommy deer's death. (Maybe mentioning it to her before watching the movie led to her being upset over it, maybe not. I really think she would have reacted either similarly or more so if I had not told her something I thought that might bother her.) The part where the mommy deer gets killed bothered her alot and she wanted to carry around the video boxes, but not watch the show. She has been asking questions and talking about the mommy deer ever since. Every time we went to the Rockland library, she sought out the Bambi video and wanted to check it out and would talk about the same things. Guess she was processing alot of information.
About three weeks or so ago, we bought a Bambi Little Golden Book at the grocery store. I read it to her as we were checking out (hoping my wild child would be interested and stay with me calmly so I could check out. It was the easiest check out ever and the cashier said she enjoyed hearing the story - Funny! I should always bring a book with me to the store for the checkout line!) We read the book that night and many, many nights. Eventually she asked me to change the words (which I often do in any book if I don't like the real words and the kids know this, but this time, SHE asked me to change the story..cool!). So now we make up a happier ending! I like it better too! The two little fawns at the end have to be Bambi and Falene with the Mommy Deer.
She was also very interested in the word MAN as it was in capital letters and represented the hunters. I took a huge square of firm cardboard paper and wrote MAN on one side and Bambi on the other. She enjoys looking at her card and Li and she discuss what it says.

Li Read His First Book!
Li has been reading lots of words here and there for the past couple of months. He points to words and reads them aloud either telling me or asking me what they say. He has done this on Club Penguin, on signs at the YMCA, in stores, in books, etc. A few nights ago, we were reading in bed and he read A Day With Barney aloud. He was so proud of himself! I am so happy he is learning to read too! And I am glad he has the ability to do it in his own time, without being forced to succumb to a schedule or made to sound out words aloud in front of classmates!
